To customize your WordPress based website, it is useful to have some knowledge about CSS. CSS stands for cascading style sheet:
“Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language used to describe the presentation semantics (the look and formatting) of a document written in a markup language. Its most common application is to style web pages written in HTML and XHTML, but the language can also be applied to any kind of XML document, including SVG and XUL.” (Wikipedia)
I clear text: CSS defines the style and look of the web site and of its content.
On WordPress based sites styles are defined in an external file called style.css which is to be found in the Theme folder (wp-content/themes/the_theme/). Some themes use multiple style sheets, others offer an array of style sheets you can chose from (usually from the dashboard where you may select between different color schemes or looks).
The syntax is simple and consists of only 3 parts:
selector { property: value }
Each selector can have multiple properties and each property can have multiple values.
The property and value are separated by a colon; they are contained within curly brackets. Multiple properties are separated by semi-colons.
Multiple values are separated by commas and if a value contains more than one word we surround it with quotation marks.
body{
background:#eaeaea;
font-family:Tahoma,"Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;
}
Nested elements inherit the properties of the containing element. The font from the above example will be inherited by all elements contained in the body, unless you make specific changes, for example for headings (usually titles and sub-titles):
h1,h2,h3,h4{
font-family:Georgia,"Times New Roman", serif;
}
From this example you see that we apply the style to multiple elements, by sticking them into one selector, whereas the elements are separated by commas.
You can add comments to your style sheet for explanatory notes.
/*My comment*/
Start your comment with a forward slash and then an asterisks and end it with an asterisks followed by a forward slash.
If you have followed to this point, you have understood the basics and the logic behind the syntax of css. We need now to learn some more about the terminology used by CSS to define values, properties and selectors before attacking our style sheet. But that’s another topic.
If you enjoyed reading the above, please consider following future tips and strategies by RSS reader, Email delivery, or Kindle subscription.Author: Yorgo Nestoridis, Media Marketing & Publishing, Founder of YORGOO Publishing, YORGOO Press and Semiomantics.

The new Semiomantics Author Blog development is based on the famous Thesis theme. While all Thesis options are available, the Semiomantics version of Thesis offers all performance related advantages of Semiomantics scripts.
The Semiomantics Author Theme based on Thesis can take most any look whereas the most evident are
Semiomantics Author can become
In fact your imagination is the limit! This is of course good news for web designers and site developers working with customers (end-users), since the basic script is the same for all possible applications. Learning to deal with Thesis enables beginner developers to play in the pro league. For this reason we have integrated the concepts of Thesis in our Ycademy schedule.
As the Author Theme is based on Thesis, all advantages of Thesis are available on the Author blog. The Semiomantics add-ons tweaks and scripts remain reserved to Semiomantics developers and will not be commented outside Semiomantics. However I will share Thesis related tips and tweaks on this blog with the purpose to serve also a wider audience of Thesis users.
The upcoming Ycademy Online Seminar will provide a thorough introduction to the Semiomantics Version of Thesis first and then implement customization. Customization will be developed in 3 different ways:

The upcoming Ycademy seminar will constitute a Milestone in Ycademy’s Blogging history. A new era will commence starting next week-end in as much as our scripts are concerned as well as the professionalism of Ycademy Pro’s Editing and Publishing.
With WordPress 3 designers take advantage of new features and users will be able to easily modify and tweak the behavior of the script, the look of the website and the surfing experience. At Semiomantics we have prepared for Ycademy pros the most incredible Webmaster Pack:
1. The bases of the new site is a framework which is tuned for optimized performance. This framework can be completed either just by Skins or Child Themes. In the future you will never need anything else than this one single framework to build the most smashing sites.
2. The Ycademy Seminar will deal with the new WordPress features as well as with all the possibilities we have to apply custom design to the websites. We finally will customize each participants Authority site.
3. The Ycademy Seminar is only the beginning of what may become a long journey for those interested in customization or in selling Semiomantics Authority Sites. In fact, the possibilities are limited to your imagination only. Subsequent to this Seminar we may add some special meetings for designers who would like to base a whole business just on the new Framework.
All Semiomantics Themes will also in the future do what they are known for: Performance.
The difference is just that the new Frameworks on WordPress 3 allow for more feature rich sites to improve the visitors experience. Also, many features which in the past were the reserved tasks of web designers, become accessible to the end user, in as much as the editing process has been expanded with variables allowing to intervene on lay-out, backgrounds, fonts and most any style element on an individual post or page base.
Also from a set-up and configuration point of view, Semiomantics makes it easy in as much as set-up and configuration will be taken care of by Semiomantics, assuring correct indexing and listing by Google and other Search Engines.
Designers who serve customers, may create static content as per user’s needs in the most personalized way, using for example static pages for impressive product presentations, splash pages or media portfolios.
In as much as I am aware of, the Semiomantics framework offers as before the only eCommerce solution based on WordPress with a fully optimized site structure where Blog and Commerce interact and interlace perfectly and perform at the same pace as our most popular arm, the Semiomantics XO.
Semiomantics will continue to update and service Semiomantics XO, NewsCast, Tabloid and the derivative products thereof. The YORGOO Blaster and the YORGOO Booster will be re-edited for the purpose of the new YORGOO Pro sites.
Consider the Seminar as an annual must to keep your High Performance Engine in shape, updated and ready for future expansion. A website is first of all a tool you need to communicate online; it’s a tool you use to present and sell your services and products. There are a few billion web pages out there but only few make it to objective visibility; the others need paid advertising to grab at least some attention.
Meaningful monthly advertising budgets hit you way more than the maintenance of your authority site. The cost for custom websites has dramatically increased in recent years; the reason is in the rapidly evolving technology its increased complexity. Also, as the average speed of our lines increase, we can deliver much more and better content in less time which has increased customers’ demand for more interesting features on a website.
The impact of the development is huge: we need to build professional websites which can handle interactive functions and media alike. We also need to be able to host such sites and we need to be able to make such sites available at a reasonable price.
At Ycademy we are at the forefront of development seeking permanently the best available bases for future development. As we are not married with any particular developer, we work with the best at any given time to provide the best available products to Ycademy Pros.
The upcoming Seminar will take our WordPress related path to profitability to a new level and with it all participants knowledge, know-how and performance, which in the end of the day will make the day of our customers.

Two years after its last retro release, Nike’s Infrared Air Max 90 makes another return for 2010. One of the brand’s more iconic runner designs, paired along the lines of the Air Max 97 and 95, the 90 is surely a welcome addition to this year’s plethora of timeless drops.
As many of you know, The Air Max 90 has become quite the icon since it’s debut in 1990. It’s the second running shoe created by Tinker Hatfield that displays a Visible Air Window on it’s exterior. No matter how many times the original Infrared colourway sees a retro release, it’s re-arrival is always welcomed with open arms.

Just a few screen-shots and links for the most recent Semiomantics Optimization of a bold WordPress Newspaper.
The WordPress header is one of the most important elements of our Ycademy Times site. The first impression counts and while we work it (photo)graphically, quick access to information and navigation are the main focus.
More important, the invisible header code from where we guide bots through the site.
Focus is on 4 categories on the right, while the vertical accordion on the left may attract the eye as well with bold images. There is also space left for a news feed from an associated site.
A similar layout we find in the
but, this time we inverse the layout: the featured categories move to the left:
The interest of Semiomantics Optimized WP Newspaper’>
The interest of Semiomantics Optimized WP NewspaperThere are many WordPress newspaper themes out there and many of them are very attractive; however, most of them will never perform in any significant way on search engines. This is the third WordPress Newspaper script optimized by Semiomantics (the previous ones are YORGOO Press and NewsCast). Time will prove that this new site will perform as well as its sister scripts, simply because the important part for performance is the Semiomantics Optimization and the way Semiomantics signed sites communicate with bots.
The site which is tested by Ycademy for the first time since yesterday when it went live, is a nice alternative to other newspaper scripts namely for people who like editing since it offers many different ways to display content in an attractive way.
But that’s not all: personally I like it because it’s at the same time a lazy man’s solution in as much as it pulls in syndicated content in a smashing way (for redistribution). Images importad via feed are automatically thumbnailed here!
I am thinking of using this script as an author blog as well, since it offers the possibility to represent on the home page all the main categories of my site … in a bold way. Time permitting I will customize the site for the use as a personal site just to have a sample in my portfolio.
Of course you want to know about performance: that is not a matter of the theme or design, for as long as the code is clean. The Semiomantics Optimization is in charge for quick and efficient delivery to destination.
The Ycademy Times site has been set up yesterday at the same time when the sub-domain has been registered. Today the site flirts with Google Top 10 (no, I won’t tell you on which keyword this time, bust as you can see, it’s in very good company beating my main site :-)).
The interest is in the quick indexing and listing by Google, but that’s another story.

Here below you will find the schedule of Ycademy till end of 2010. Before entering into the details, let me put the program into the wider context of our development.
There are a few major events ahead of us:
In October we will finish up with NewsCast where not yet done and then work on the future corporate image of Semiomantics; this means for parties interested in being part of Semiomantics, to build a personal image and presentation according to semiomantics standards and guidelines. Bianca is working with you on these pages to start with on the new Semiomantics EVO site.
The Ycademy October Seminar will bring us a big step ahead in as much as our WordPress related knowledge is concerned. On the example of the new Author Blog we will become familial with new design, editing and publishing standards which will slowly but surely become standards on WordPress Blogs and CMS.
This is an extremely important Seminar for all who wish to do custom design and website development. Also, all participants will end up with a brand new Author Site built according to the highest standards and customized during the Seminar.
The last October week will be reserved to do some post-seminar work if we are not able to handle the whole curriculum during the week-end.
Between the 1 of November and the November Seminar, there are 20 calls. We will build 20 products in 20 calls. These will be Semiomantics products you may sell directly from your store.These products will also constitute a solid base for your portfolio. This 20 calls – 20 products will be a spectacular exercise!
To be able to work efficiently we will need to have an training site which will be provided by Ycademy – you will get a sandbox site at Ycademy net which we will set up by November for each participant.
The goal is to get better and faster and more flexible with theme customization and to experience the joy of being able to tweak any theme to customer needs. The reason for this mega exercise is in the increasing cost of site development and design as the competition gets rougher and as we need to be able to build sites with a unique look, touch and feel in useful time.

The November Seminar
The Seminar will have to deal with the consolidation of the work done in November and will culminate in building and setting up a personal portfolio, linked to the Shop, the Consultant site as well as to the Author site. The seminar will finally put the pieces and bits together to end up with a professionally looking online business.
After the seminar I expect some post-seminar sessions to take place to finalize some details.
December will be focused on the new YORGOO Network. A special presentation will take place shortly with a preview of what will be coming. Important: all Semiomantics Partners will be exposed in YORGOO to help new subscribers; this concerns namely configuration and customization services.
In December Ycademy Pros will become familiar with the new YORGOO Network and test it. YORGOO will be a membership program with multiple membership levels and packages.
December Seminar
The December Seminar will deal with YORGOO and we will set up participants’ websites there. This will give participants an advance of 1 month before we officially go public with YORGOO. During that time we will prepare the internal products on offer for YORGOO users.
The Ycademy team as well as all those who have followed our seminars, have acquired tremendous knowledge. This knowledge is exploited individually and in the future also collectively by joining forces in various ventures such as:
As soon as YORGOO 2011 will be released we will again strictly separate between Ycademy calls and YORGOO calls, whereas the Ycademy Pros will take the leading role in the development of YORGOO 2011.
More than ever an online business needs professional websites and website development. Leading by doing will show that the impossible can become possible with the right attitude, means and efforts even for those who have limited financial resources and time.

Here are 5 main benefits Ycademy Pro provides:
Additional benefits
Ycademy Pro is a $30 per month subscription. New Pros will have to pay a one time set-up fee of $85 for the time being to get all the above infrastructure. This price will apply during the month of October 2010. Thereafter new Ycademy Pros will receive just the Ycademy.net Sandbox site.
We like to work on a personal bases. Please contact Bianca Gubalke (bianca(at)ycademy.com) or myself for more info.

In any case, the call for “peace” and “joining the dream” is a universal one and who ever wanted at any given time, build a community, religious or just for the time of an LSD trip, has used the formula … from the good old Greeks of course (oh, the Chineese may have had it before, as well as the Egyptians and before them probably the cave men, and other Australopithecus).
The result is brilliant, the marketing works and the cash is flowing for ever as all of this remains … a dream.

In order to avoid downtime of the websites, it is important to keep scripts of WordPress, Plugins and as the case may be, themes updated. In the case of the News Paper where the data base is under more strain than on the Author blog, we use a plugin to optimize and to back up the data and files automatically.
For a quick result, install from your dashboard a new plugin, called BackWPup.
The plugin may trigger some comments about missing folders, such as the log folder. Just create the necessary folders via FTP and name them as per comment and CHMOD them to 777. Also make sure you add YOUR FTP access to the Full Back-up Job!

Having taken care of the most impressive features such as colors, background and fonts as per our previous post, we can now look at some hacks from the dashboard and on the php template files.
The first feature we notice is the choice of preset styles. Even if you count on customizing the style sheet, selecting a base close to where you want to go will make your task easier. Note that besides the choice of colors, you have always two style versions, one of them being “sans-”.
Sans stands for sans-serif and means that the style will use sans-serif fonts (Helveticam, Arial, Tahoma and such like), compared to serif fonts such as Times New Roman, Georgia and so on.
To start with, just enable the sections for which you have content and grow as you advance. For example, just start with your top section and the photo gallery for example to rapidly populate your new website. Then you may add some videos and may be some ads.
The layout selector allows you to structure your home page to taste. Test it, try it and experiment with different settings.

Copyright © 2010 Yorgo Nestoridis. Visit the original article at http://yorgonestoridis.com/yorgo-nestoridis-publishing-1/we-are-the-semiomantics-world.Semiomantics, created based on needs arising from YORGOO, a free program for Home Business Builders has evolved to a top notch business, building the probably best WordPress based websites.
In fact, this has nothing to do with WordPress as Semiomantics can be applied to any website.
For our demo site of the new Semiomantics EVO we have chosen the famous song USA for Africa by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.
May be we are not, but we contribute to make the bloggosphere a better world, no doubt! I am not a snob, or am I? In any case, I am fed up by all these ugly sites out there and statistics prove me right: a site needs to be sexy to be read and the yogurt like and minimalistic sites (like mine) are out, completely out! People just click them away since they would have to concentrate on content and who on earth wants to focus on content anyway?
Forget it, it’s about fun, entertainment, visual pleasure, music, video, … media all over!
If by any chance you are still reading, click me away and go to Semiomantics EVO to see what a sexy site has to look like. Listen to the song, read and surf and tell me: would you not like to have such a site to propagate your image, look and authority?

It’s a world of craftsmanship. A world where devoted people care about customers, their performance and success. Semiomantics has grown on the same base and with the same fertilizer as YORGOO: humans who care, professionalism and extremely performance oriented product design.
There is no hype and there is no exuberance but there is straight forward communication involving the customer all along the product development phase. There is time for talk and there is time for testing. There is care to details and there is the art of implementing the impossible!
Semiomantics is an Elite product for the best and for those who only want the best. Semiomantics is a signature applied to a site once it has proven to perform and to satisfy our unequaled design standards.
From smashing WOW-effects to minimalistic, sober elegance, semiomantics provides it all; have a look. It will depend on the designer of your project and you are free to choose, who will work with you on your design. But you will also see that every designer has his/her style and way of perceiving and translating perception into visual communication.
Look at the samples from Bianca Gubalke for example: professional design, visual effects and care for details! Any of her sites and works stick out from the crowd and make the sites special, very special.
I don’t know of any SEO company being as transparent as Semiomantics: we announce our goals BEFORE getting there and then we just do it. I don’t know of any product online with such a track-record as Semiomantics and I have never seen anything getting even close to Semiomantics in SEO in respect of WordPress based sites or even Flash.
Have a look at the kind of websites we propelled to Google Top 10 from here; these designs have all been tuned by Semiomantics to reach top performance on their respective keywords.
Sure you will find contracts at $4000 – $5000 per month to keep your site optimized. Semiomantics does it for a fraction and scores higher than its best competitors. Too bad we have ,such a limited capacity. On the other hand, we believe the performance of our customers is our best reference and in the fact, that we are a business where craftsmanship is, what makes the difference.
For as long as I will remain at the helm of Semiomantics, this attitude will not change and we will continue to build the best sites out there … at any price, for the benefit of our customers.

The site background can be adapted to the content of the post, by adding a custom class to the css style-sheet and by calling the class from the post editor. In this example I have used a large background photo 2000 x 15000 pixels with a weight of 100 Kb about.
Note that the same image is featured in the top right media box and attached to this post only.
I have attached to the post the above image which will be thumbnailed automatically by the script for various display purposes. The image is placed above the post text in this case.
Fonts and their colors can be customized. Note here blue ink with Times font-face.
More tests will have to follow before release of the script.
